Previous Entry Help! Dec. 5th, 2005 @ 06:01 pm Next Entry
I have only recently acquired a paid account and therefore my scrapbook.

I managed to upload 10 pictures/photos, I did hit a few problems while doing this, in that I had to keep hitting the upload button until it finally stopped freezing at around 80%, but they all uploaded in the end.

Yesterday and today I have tried to upload another batch of pictures. Now, it either freezes and no amount of hitting the upload button seems to correct this, or it gets to around 15-20% then starts again with out me hitting anything. It will do this a few times and then freeze.

I tried the XP client and it only gives me the option to upload onto MSN, not scrapbook. I have no idea what the command-line client is, I don't have iPhoto and the last one, Filmgold is it, seems to be a dead link.

I am getting very frustrated...

I hope I am not doing something incredibly stupid. At the moment I am blaming AOL, as it seems to cause most the problems in my [internet] life.

Can anyone help?

I really don't know to much about how this all works, but I've got two suggestions for you as far as the XP client goes.

After you've merged the file into your registry, try a restart. Just because. Sometimes that helps. Make sure the file made it into your registry though - some security programs you might be running may have blocked the file from merging in. I can't really give you a good way to check to see if the registry key installed, but try to be aware of any prompts or anything that come up when you double click on the file. Allow any changes.

Second, before you go to publish, make sure you're logged into LJ in Internet Explorer. I don't want to sound condescending or anything, but some AOL users aren't even aware that you can use IE. I think this might have been fixed, but when I first downloaded the XP thing, if I didn't log into LJ in IE, the wizard just looped endlessly and laughed at me.

Like I said, I don't really know about how this all works, but those are two things you might want to try.

I received no prompts, and a restart was the first thing I tried (I do this automatically when anything doesn't work :)

I was logged in, just not through IE, I will try that next though (once I have finished ordering my tickets).

I don't want to sound condescending or anything, but some AOL users aren't even aware that you can use IE.

Well, when I first started out using AOL I didn't know this... took me about 20 seconds to find out though ;)

Thanks for the suggestion

If you want to keep trying to fix this problem (if not, that's cool) I've got two more things for you....

The fact that you said you received no prompts leads me to believe that the proper file never installed. At the very least, if you're running XP with SP2, you should have seen this:

If you didn't even get that, then it is definitely not installed.

If you want to check if it installed, here are some instructions:

Go to Start, and then click Run.

Type "regedit" in to the box. Click okay.

You'll see a tree-like navigation on the left. Before we begin, let me stress that you should't change or delete anything! Doing so could really really mess up your computer.

That said, open up the tree to this path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\PublishingWizard\PublishingWizard\Providers\ScrapBook]

If you get there, then it is installed. If not, it isn't installed.

If you need more help, let me know. If you do, if you could let me know as much about your computer as possible, that'd be great. I would like to know such things as any type of AntiVirus/Spyware software you use, version of Windows XP (home or pro) and what browser you primarily use.

Yes, I still want to try, scrap book was a big selling point when I decided to pay :)

I got there, so it is installed.

XP Professional. Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
I have McAfee Personal Firewall Plus (set at tight) and XP firewall.
I don't have a virus checker, I scan online through McAfee
AOL has spyware software, that is the one I primarily use, since it was the only one that found the keylogger on my PC. I occasionally use Adware 6 and spybot.
I usually just use AOL, sometimes I use IE, but that is still through AOL's connection.

I haven't got much else for you, sorry!

The last thing I can give you to double check would be this...you indicated that you were able to navigate to the proper point in the registry...within the scrapbook folder, did you have these entries?

At this point I'd open a support request, since those people are likely in a better position than I to help with your problem. I'd suggest linking them to this post, so then can look at what you've tried.

Good luck!

Yeah, they are all there.

Thanks very much for your help, though.

I made my support call, then I went to look at all the closed calls, in there it had the solution.

I was being silly :D I was trying to upload BMP files which don't work, even the client won't work as scrapbook doesn't support these files. When I upload a JPEG the client shows.

I didn't even think they were BMP files, because I normally save them as JPEGs on photoshop, but this particular batch came from paintbrush.

Sorry for wasting you time, and thanks again for he help. At least you have something else to suggest for the next idiot who comes along with the same issue!

Client doesn't work when logged on through IE either.

Oh well, I guess I will just have to keep trying the old way and hope I get lucky, like with the first ten pictures.

I've had this problem with uploading multiple pictures as well. If I do about 5, everything goes okay. Trying to do 10 just leads to stalling and nothing happens.

I don't know why that is, so I guess my only advice is... upload smaller batches for now. :/

I have tried with one or two.

The first ten were done in three seperate batches (4,4 and 2). The most recent lot I have tried one or two or three etc.

It still doesn't work, but thanks for the suggestion.
