Tags, And Galleries and Confusion, Oh My!

So I put some photos up online, and then made use of the new glorious Tagging functionality, assuming that this would put them into galleries.  After all, you could put photos into multiple galleries, I assumes that the tags were the same thing.

But no, they're not.

Is there a reason why we have two near-identical systems in place?

Or that I can't just convert all my current galleries to tags, or vice versa and then keep them the same?

They're the same thing. A tag is just an alias for a gallery, and if you use a tag that doesn't have a corresponding gallery, it automatically makes one for you.

You can go and associate a tag with an old gallery retroactively from the manage gallery page (change Gallery Type to "Topic" and change the tag). If you assign an already-in-use tag to an old gallery, it'll prompt you to merge the two galleries into one.

Everybody here's quite aware of the confusion and we'll slowly be getting more usable.

It doesn't seem to be working right in that case. Unless, once it's created a gallery, I still have to link it to the heirarchy in order for it to show?

Oh, and my gallery list no longer shows any of my tag galleries. It did last night - and tag:Edinburgh was linked from my Edinburgh gallery until 5 minutes ago - but I decided to unlink it and relink it, and then couldn't find it again. Yesterday they were at the bottom of my galleries - today they've vanished!

That's a recent change, hiding tags from "manage gals".

If you want to see all of them, go to:

http://pics.livejournal.com/manage/gals?show=all

Tag galleries are also special in that they don't tend to show up on the published/public view, unless you rename their gallery title from "Tag: foo" to "foo" or "Foo" or something more interesting than "Tag: _______". The thought being you obviously don't care about it that much if you kept it at its default automatic title.

Could this possibly be written up somewhere?

All I actually did was upload a bunch of images to the default 'unsorted' gallery, and then tag them. The current effect of this is to put them into invisible galleries, without any obvious way to get at them.

If the expected way that galleries would be used could be documented, that'd be great!

The gallery management page (manage/gals) is the biggest project underway right now.... it'll let you view all your galleries in a dozen different ways/filters/sorts, all without leaving the page (in-page sort, etc).

For now I've reverted the show=all "feature", having not anticipated your "unsorted" + tags ==> now invisible path.

I was pointed to post this query here.

I tagged 50 images in a scrapbook gallery and got this error:

[Error: Can't call method "valid" on unblessed reference at /home/lj/fb/lib/FB/Gallery.pm line 906. ]
