I'd like to set up a gallery that's designed to serve user icons related to the community tvgirlfriends. The way it's set up now works pretty well, but there's a couple of things I'd love to see. If either of these are already possible, let me know.

Firstly, I'd love for the descriptions to parse the <lj user="username"> and <lj comm="communityname"> tags, so that we can include credits and links in the description with the pretty links. As you can see in my current gallery, the html currently just looks bad. This seems like something that might be style-dependent, in which case I could probably edit one of the styles out there to do it, though the one I'm using right now is sadly closed-source.

Secondly, it would be very nice to have a direct link, when viewing other people's galleries, that allows you to upload the picture/thumbnail as a user icon, with defaults of the picture's Title for Keywords and Description for Comments. The current system of copying the image into ones own gallery and going through the "manage picture" page is possibly even slower than just downloading the image and re-uploading it. This, I think, needs to be addressed at a lower level than the styles, though I may be able to hack a temporary method (opening the normal upload form with the web address filled in for the correct-sized thumbnail) in a style. It seems like something that should be pretty basic if you really want to claim "integration" with LJ.

Finally, even if the above isn't implemented, it currently seems that if you go to copy a picture from somebody else's gallery to your own, it doesn't fill in the Title and Description boxes with defaults. Seems to me, the defaults should be whatever the Title and Description of the original picture were.

In Firefox you can just 'copy image location' of the thumbnail and copy the URL into 'manage pictures': takes a couple of seconds. In IE it wouldn't be that difficult to do it either. Or you could put the thumbnail URL into the description for people to do just that with.

How many people would really want that feature unless it was for icon communities? Not a huge amount, I wouldn't think although I may be entirely wrong. Thumbnails aren't all 100x100 AFAIR or should there have to be a special icon sized thumbnail?

You needn't even go through "manage pictures": the Upload a New Picture form on the Manage User Pictures page for your LJ account will accept URLs.

We're talking about the exact same page and that's precisely what I meant :-)

In Firefox you can just 'copy image location' of the thumbnail and copy the URL into 'manage pictures': takes a couple of seconds.

This requires the gallery to use the 100x100 images for their thumbnails, which many icon views don't use. It also doesn't automatically enter the Keywords and Comments, which is the main reason to add it through Scrapbook at all.

I can definitely imagine using it, for example, while browsing a favorite photographer's collection, even if they didn't originally plan for that. If I see a really nice picture, I might well want to make a user icon out of it. Setting this link up as an optional property of all (or at least most) styles would make it easy to do. But even if it is just implemented in a style designed for icon collections, is that bad? I would think a large number of livejournal users and communities would use their scrapbook space to store all their favorite icons, linking to it from their page or user info. Seems like a natural integration.

It appears that all images have an s100x100 version built in, which I assume is used in the already-existing ability to transfer ones own image to user icons. For example, here's the 100x100 (max) version of one of your images:

I went ahead and implemented a hacked-together style, based on Super Simple, that lets me do these things (add as user icon and parse lj user and comm tags). It's style number 14200 if you're interested in making a gallery for your icons. An example of it in action is here.

I hope I'm not accidentally asking a question that has a very convoluted answer, but how did you add the ability to parse the user and comm tags to your style? I have some photos that would really benefit from this, but I don't want to completely change my style, as I have painstakingly fiddled with it to make it match my journal. I was previously just hoping LJ would fix this, but if there's something I could add to the style to make it work, I'd be interested in trying to fix it myself. I tried to view your style but I got an error saying it wasn't public.

You can see the code for the parsing in the second-to-the-top post at fblayers. It's not very elegant, but it works.

I'm surprised my style isn't public. Maybe I'll try to fix that soon.
