Picture Upload Errors
Jan. 28th, 2005 @ 02:43 pm
We're trying to get some information from FotoBilder/ScrapBook users about the specifics of some upload failure reports we've been receiving. People have been reporting that they sometimes upload a picture, then receive a 404 (Not Found) when trying to view it. This problem usually persists even if you delete the pictures and re-upload them.
Any detailed reports of this or similar problems occurring would be very useful to us in tracking them down. Please comment on this post with the following information if you think you're experiencing this problem:
1) What client you are using. If fotoup.pl, does it post to /interface/upload or /interface/simple?
2) What specific error messages, if any, do you receive. Both on upload and when trying to view the picture.
3) The URLs of pictures in question, if you have them.
Thanks in advance. We hope to have this fixed soon.

I get a few errors
First error I get is when I try to upload into a folder any other than "Unsorted". I click to update list and I get a "Gallery 18 Unknown" error. I can't ever see any other folders besides "Unsorted"
Then, every tiem I try to upload files I get this "InternetWriteFile(90112/178099): The connection with the server was reset.
I downloaded the windows version of the client from the picpix site yeseterday. I can upload via the web just fine.

Re: I get a few errors
That Gallery 18 Unknown error is a known bug with the old-and-broken Windows client. :-/ Hopefully we can get a replacement for that fairly soon.
How often do you get that Connection Reset error? Does it perhaps only happen when you upload a picture that already existed in another gallery of yours?

Re: I get a few errors
Seems to happen all the time. I don't think I've uploaded a photo with the client yet.

1. I am not using a LJ specific client, I am using the web page upload tool. I am using IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2.rtm.040803-2158, Windows XP Pro with SP 2.
If I get the 404 error upon uploading between this page:http://pics.livejournal.com/manage/
and the next. It seems to hang between that and the one that says it is the upload webpage interface. It also seems to do this more when I use the back buttons to return to the page listed above. If I begin again from this page:http://pics.livejournal.com/
using the link at the bottom, then I generally can avoid the 404.
As far as the broken link pictures, I think that may be some unknown issue with the specific tool used to edit pictures. I am using Picasa 2 to edit the pictures before uploading them. I found that resaving the pictures through Picasa 2 eliminated the broken link problem pretty effectively.
That is all I have discovered. I have had more issues with the 404 errors on upload recently then the broken link pictures, since I found that resaving them solved the problem.
No matter what this image won't show: http://pics.livejournal.com/xtremesaints/pic/00046655/g11
I've already deleted and reuploaded the image, (by the way, I can't remember offhand what exact image it is from my HD, but it's the same type of image I've always been uploading onto FB/Scrapbook)
I've used the web client. No error message I don't recall, just the 404 on the image itself.

I just put a change live that will allow you to re-upload these... try one more time and let me know if it works?

Still not working
I deleted and re-uploaded. Like before, the upload process seemed to work but showed me blue and white question marks (the mac. equivalent of red crosses). What is different this time though is that they aren't showing up in gallery views even with question marks; there's no sign of any thumbnails for them.
Sorry, my mistake: I put them in the unsorted gallery by mistake. But still have the question marks as thumbnails though, so basically no difference from before.

Using Mozilla Firefox 1.0 on a fully patched Windows XP behind a personal hardware firewall, using the web interface for uploads and management. Current AV and three types of anti-spyware loaded, all report no local system issues. All other applications and webpages functioning within expected parameters.Problem
Sometimes when I try to load pictures, the load fails. One the load has failed. No number of retries will allow the image to load (perhaps trying to load too many images at once). If I delete them and try to re-load, it looks like it loads, but no image is present. Renaming the file does not help. Loading to a different gallery (at least within the same journal) does not seem to help.Fix
I have found that if I modify the image (crop it, change the contrast, red-eye remove, etc...; not rename or just update last saved time/date) and they try to load it, the system sees it a different and then tries again and usually succeeds. This implies some kind of MD5-like hash caching at the server side which when a file of same hash attempts to be loaded, it either doesn't bother to really try to load it and uses the corrupt cached version, or it makes problematic the new load.Suggestion
If we had a way to let the system know an image is bad, so it really will attempt re-load it or purge it's cached values, would be helpful.

Re: My Senairo
Somehow your previous original had been bad in the batabase... so when you re-uploaded image data that had the same fingerprint, we went with the existing, which we thought we had. I just put a change live for this. Let me know if you aren't able to re-upload.
Thanks for the report.

Re: My Senairo
I teaked all the problem ones and uploaded already. So I don't have any outstanding issues at the moment. But if I encounter any more, I will let you know by reply to this thread.

I don't know if this is a part of it. Haven't had a problem up until now, might be linking to unsorted pictures?
Anyway, I've uploaded a couple of very small pictures to my unsorted gallery and linked to them. They worked initially, but now when I log in, I can't even get to the scrapbook homepage. It seems to find the server no problem, but drops out with a 500 error I think?
I'm using Semagic 184.108.40.206 to upload pictures (as the FB client I downloaded off Evan didn't work particularly well).
Links, umm. I'm not sure if I've linked to the correct images. I'll get them in a sec.
I know this post is old but it's the most recent I can find, and I'm having this exact problem. I uploaded some photos and my connection dropped in the middle of the upload. I tried to upload them again and was just getting blanks. So I deleted the blank images, cleared my cache, changed the filenames of the photos, and tried again, and still the same problem. Some of these comments suggest the problem had been fixed a month ago, but it does seem to be back.
I'm using the web interface, Mozilla 1.6 under Win98.
I also know this is even older now but here's the info:
1. web interface (firefox 1.0.2 ; IE)
2. no errors but on the upload, it has the standard blank image of when there is a broken link.
3. It is rather random which pictures get this error but one that I've saved for ref is http://pics.livejournal.com/russell_t/pic/00029fda/
No matter how i rename, where i upload from, etc, it just won't show.
