First Time for the Whole thing to go foobar..

Previous Entry First Time for the Whole thing to go foobar.. Jan. 25th, 2005 @ 04:50 pm Next Entry
Alright I tried to make a new gallery today, and for the first time the whole thing is foobar. All the pictures are broken links. I made this one exactly as I did all the rest, so....anyone got any ideas why this one would be totally bonkers?

http://pics.livejournal.com/nalora/gallery/0000by22

I have tried deleting it, beginning again, same song, second verse.

sigh

Is there a programmer living that does not over program things?

It seems to be working at least partially for me. I can see http://pics.livejournal.com/nalora/pic/0001wb7x/g11

The others seem to be trying to load, but it's hanging in the queue.

I've had this same problem for the last several days. If uploading a pic didn't work the first time, it wouldn't work the second, third, fourth, etc. What I finally did was rename the picture files and then they uploaded just fine. It seems like if a picture has trouble uploading the first time, the system remembers the file name and won't upload it ever until you rename it. Hopefully it is a bug that they will fix because it is really annoying when you try to upload 5 or 10 pictures and then have to rename all of them before trying to upload them again.

First understand this new site is still in beta testing stages.

Second are you a paid user. Just a thought.

I've been on in it for a month and I've not had any problems unless the server goes down when they move stuff around. When the server goes back up my pics are there with no problems.

I don't know what to tell you. I personally think its a great site just wish they had a slide show in the program.

If you are not paid user become one and see if that works. IF not it could be any number of factors.

Ok I took a look. Its not you. Its the server. They are moving things around again. Be patient. I will check mine.

uh, pretty much all beta users fall into paid or permanent category . . .

and you can tell these people are paid by looking at their user info.

and lastly, LJ doesn't run some different version of code for doing actions for people based on whether or not they are paid . . .

First I am a paid user. I was under the impression that this beta test was only open to paid or permanent users.

I am also aware that in a beta test, generally the developers would like to know when there is a problem. This one seems to be fairly common, and I have seen quite a few work-arounds, none of which address and correct the underlying problem.

I have not had this particular problem before, and have not changed the way I have created galleries. In fact, I have just "followed the bouncing ball" so to speak on the creation and upload pages. Again...something is foobar.

(again she sighs)

Yes, I am a paid user. To my knowledge, only paid users and people with permanent accounts even have access to this feature.

And yes, I do understand this is still in beta. I also know the point of beta testing is to point out problems, which is what is occuring here. One user had a problem which I had experienced before and I shared the way I found to get around said problem. Simple as that.

This is also a forum for users to point out problems like these so that the staff can look into them. Pointing out a problem does not mean a person does not like the site. I'm glad you love the site, I love it too! But just because I love it doesn't mean I'll say it does not have any problems. It does have problems, hence why it is still in the beta phase. :)

Tried this work around. It continues to just provide a broken link and no picture. Only one successfully loaded--and that one from the first upload. I have subsequently deleted all the ones that were originally there except the one successful upload.

sigh. what a mess.

I was in the U. S. Army. I know what foobar is and its origin as an acronym. I am also a southern gal. We have a tendency in this part of the country to make all kinds of "cuss words" our own --- would you like to tell me how to spell the following correctly: Dagnabbit, Galldarnit, Holy Smokes. I am sure you can tell how they have been changed once they hit southern vernacular.

No offence, just thought you might like an explanation of why I might choose an alternate spelling---if in fact you can "spell" an acronym. But that is another thing entirely, isn't it?

Isn't the entire point of an acronym that it is spelled a certain way? I just found it quite odd that you were suggesting that an acronym may not be possible to be spelled. If it stands for certain words, it's going to always use the same letters, isn't it?

Are there alternate spellings for LASER and SCUBA and NaBisCo that I am not aware of? If so, wouldn't they then, necessarily, be acronyms for other sets of words and, therefore, not the same acronym?

Foobar/Fubar

It is a medical term: FUCKED UP BEYOND ALL REPAIR. Often used in reference to motorcycle injuries and war injuries. Even I know that, silly :-)

And I ride a Motorcycle, sometimes.

When there are multiple buttons, bells, whistles, alarms, pages to load, things to remember to do one simple process, I think it is safe to say that there just might be a tendency to overprogram something that *should* be simple.

Well, I just deleted the entire gallery again, since I noticed that not only is there only one picture that is successfully uploading into that gallery but the "count" is off. That is, it is telling me there are three pictures there, but only one picture and one broken link is showing up.

I had a problem once, but think it was due to using the wrong type of file name (the pictures came off a cd supplier by the photo developer) When I loaded them from another folder on the cd it worked fine.

I haven't had any problems apart from that, except having to use the back button on the browser to get back to my journal.

MS Outlook is over programmed. I haven't ever felt LJ was. It seems to be pretty intuitive throughout and I continue to be impressed by the whole package and the people who make it happen.

Well, I tried again this morning to upload pictures and it is still just giving me broken links. I have tried renaming the files, I have tried resaving the files, I have tried deleting the gallery and redoing it.

I tried to just upload the pics to the "unsorted" gallery and now the count again is off on that gallery. It says that there is 1 picture there, and yet when I click on the button that says picture to delete the picture there, it then tells me there are no photos in the gallery.

Whatever has happened to the Scrapbook since the beginning of Jan. to now has caused it to cease to function for me. If it were on my computer I would uninstall and reinstall, but of course it is not, so this is not an option. As it is, Scrapbook is now useless to me entirely as it does not allow me to upload pictures.

Alright, after a lot of redundancy and reworking, and remembering exact pathways, I finally "worked around" the problems and got a new gallery out of it.

I had to:

1. Reload the pictures in the program I originally used to manipulate them, resave them to a brand new folder on my computer.

2. Upload to unsorted gallery, one picture at a time from the first available upload page:

http://pics.livejournal.com/manage/

and not:

http://pics.livejournal.com/manage/upload

This latter page seems to be the crux of the problem. It frequently will hang up and give an error when uploading.

Once uploaded into the unsorted gallery, I could make a new, empty gallery to transfer them to, however I also got multiple errors and had to remember exactly what path I took to manipulate the photos as there is no way to easily return to:

http://pics.livejournal.com/manage/pics

once you have done any file management from that page.

I have reported all redundancies and errors using the Feedback option, since my little post here requesting help has digressed way off topic and become a kind of trolling strip for LJ Drama, which I don't really care to participate in.
