Loss of quality

Previous Entry Loss of quality Nov. 29th, 2004 @ 12:39 pm Next Entry
I uploaded a few pictures last night and the seem to have got compressed and lost quality. Anyone else had this or know the reason for it? None of them were particularly huge to begin with (none over 170k).

We don't recompress or otherwise modify at all the original photos you upload. We only generate thumbnails and scaled versions. It may be that those scaled versions are what you're finding ugly, and that might be our fault. However, your original is untouched.

Thanks for the clarification.

I think it probably was the scaled down version where I noticed this, but I can't actually check now as I deleted those images (as well as my local copies) from the gallery and resized them again from the originals with a higher jpeg quality and re-uploaded. This seems to have fixed the problem.

The whole system is otherwise incredibly nifty though :-) The only slight criticism I would have is that I couldn't find previews for the different styles, but I'm guessing that will come in time.

Yeah. FotoBilder had S2 before LiveJournal did — it was a good opportunity to test it on something that wasn't being used by 10,000 people — so the guts of it got written and then moved over to LiveJournal once it was working well. Since then, all of the wizzy nice stuff got added to S2 because there were loads of people giving good feedback on it, so now all of that lovin' just needs to be applied back to FotoBilder.

On FotoBilder, you're basically seeing S2 circa November 2002. :)

Mine lost a little quality when I posted them to my LJ, but they still look good in the photo album.
