Email-posting and image attachments
Sep. 4th, 2004 @ 11:57 pm
I've submitted this as a support request, and on the fotobilder dev community, but I think it's more proper to ask for help here... sorry about the xpost.
I'm using a Motorola V300 through T-Mobile to send a "picture message" to my journal. I don't have any problems email-posting from the phone, but if I include an attachment neither the post nor the image appear. I've tried several different ways (sending a Picture Message, creating a Text Message and then attaching the picture to the msg, etc), but I can't seem to get it to work.
When I send Picture Messages to regular email addresses it always works.
I know I've set up my email-post options correctly because if I send a "text message" (aka email) to my journal it works prefectly.
Thanks in advance!
Yeah, I'm using the right pin info/address (I'm using the format starless+XXXX@post.livejournal.com). Plus I'm sending to the same entry in my phonebook and emails without image attachments work without incident.
The encoding is MIME 1.0 multipart. The images are in .jpg.
Thanks for the link, but I've looked it over before... and I'm purposefully not using any parameters in the body just so that I can troubleshoot this. Maybe I'll try to use a couple parameters just to see what happens. The problem is I only get 20 free "media messages" per month from T-Mobile before they start charging me :/
Thanks for the help.
i was having trouble posting pics and not posting msgs.
finally, after a bit of help i realized the pics were
being sent via a different address than text posts.
verizon pic posts: from firstname.lastname@example.org
verizon txt posts: from email@example.com
once i changed my email-post options, it fixed my
of course currently my pics aren't posting but thats
a whole different story.
Hmmm... there's a thought. I'll have to check that out, thanks :)

If after doublechecking your From: address it still isn't working, please send a message (with pict) from your phone to firstname.lastname@example.org so I can examine it, and see if you phone is doing anything wonky we need to check for.
I checked the "from: issue" by sending myself text and picture messages seperately. They don't seem to be coming from 2 different sources.
T-Mobile puts a little footer with graphics at the bottom of Picture Messages. I was hoping that using the "__" option at the bottom of my post would truncate the extra stuff out, but I may be wrong. I'm sending you an image attachment right after I click Post Reply...
I'm having the exact same problem. Same carrier, different phone. If you figure this one out, can you please make sure to post the solution here? It would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Hmmm. I just looked at the source of one of my emails from the phone. It's all HTML and CSS... I'm doubting that this is ever going to work for us (T-Mobile people).
I'll let you know if I find out anything worth mentioning.
Have you had a chance to look over my message?

I'm sorry, I didn't ever receive your message. email@example.com? (or, maybe your phone service isn't ever sending out anything at all, eh?)
It works to everyone else I send to, including email addresses.
I'll try again.

I got that one.
Taking a look when I have a spare moment, I'll reply with what I find.
Cool, thanks a lot :)
I have a feeling your going to see all of the CSS and tell me that's the problem...

Your phone seems to set the mime types for multipart messages to 'multipart/related', when we were just checking for 'multipart/alternative'.
Think we're catching all the wacked out variations now, I used your message to test locally, and it worked fine.
New code is already live. TMobile phones -should- work just dandy now. Let me know your mileage.

Yes, perfectly dandy :)
The only problem has nothing to do with your code... T-Mobile puts an annoying footer at the bottom of every "picture message" which includes 4 images. Blech. I guess you can't escape the branding.
Thanks for all of your attention and work, I really apreciate it. I'm going to be living on a ship for 6 months and I don't have a digital camera... this will make sharing the sights so much easier.
You saved my LJ life :)
HIP HIP HOOORAY!
HIP HIP HOOORAY!!
HIP HIP HOOORAY!!!!
Have you figured out why your pics aren't posting? I can post from my phone, but I have the same problem as starless
... when I send attachments they don't show. Hm.

good luck to you
i finally figured it out..
i had email options set to accept pic
from address firstname.lastname@example.org which
worked then it only worked when i added "1"
before areacode. i found out by sending pic to
my regular email to see what the return address
was. why it changed i don't know. but fingers
crossed because its working again.

Re: good luck to you
Mahlon fixed it :)
As soon as he posted that the new code was live I started testing again and everything runs perfectly.
Everyone... 3 CHEERS FOR MAHLON!!!!!
