The whole

Choose other picture
Alternatively, you may choose a picture from another gallery by entering its ID number

is horrible. maybe if it let you click on a link tht popped up a small window that had a list of thumbnails and their id's.. otherwise a usability nightmare

Agreed.

It was a last-second addition to solve the problem of how to add a preview icon to a gallery that has no pictures. Like a container gallery with only sub-galleries.

But I don't think a popup with id numbers would work. What if you have hundreds of pictures? I think a better way would be to have a manage picture page let you assign that picture as the preview image for any other gallery.

Would that work?

well, how about this for the pop up.. View them in batches of 10, with neat little links at the bottom and top:
<
[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<last [...] |>') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

?
its simple with sql

or even better... how about a global gallery.. only available to the owner of the account. which lets you cycle through ALL your images

Everything's simple, regardless of the language.

But I don't think that's the right UI. No, I know that's not the right UI. Even with "batches of 10", it'd take forever to get through 5000+ pictures.

very true...

when i said the thing about sql, i meant it would most likely be most efficient if implemented at that level.

my other alternative..
a link to [other] instead of picture id.
link takes you to a page where you can brose through your galleries through a tree, and when you click on a thumb, or its name instead of showing you a larger version it "selects" that picture. or you could do it with radio buttons..
i almost want to say think a split view in a file manager
