Bug report--orphan galleries

Previous Entry Bug report--orphan galleries Jul. 22nd, 2004 @ 07:13 pm Next Entry
Okay, I did something silly, and now I've got wacky behavior.

I created a gallery called "Iraq", for war-related pictures. I then decided that I wanted to put it inside another gallery.

I clicked its name from the "manage your galleries" screen.

In the "modify selected" window, I chose the action "Add parent gallery". I left the "Parent Gallery" option set to "(select)" (I didn't choose a parent gallery). I clicked "Proceed".

I think I was assuming that either it wouldn't do anything, or it would prompt me to create a new gallery and move "Iraq" into it. (That's what I wanted to do--create a new gallery, and move "Iraq" into it, all at once.)

Instead, the "Iraq" gallery vanished. It wasn't listed in the "Current Galleries" screen at all.

The weirdness continues. Thinking that the gallery was just deleted, I created a new gallery named "Iraq". Then I launched the "Fotobilder" client, clicked the "Choose gallery" button, and clicked "Update List". I got an error, "Gallery 4 unknown". When I deleted my new "Iraq" gallery, I stopped getting that error.

I think what's going on is this: When I changed the parent of the first version of the "Iraq" gallery, it became an orphan. It is still attached to my account, but since it doesn't have a well-defined parent, it doesn't show up in my gallery or in the client. But when I create a second gallery named "Iraq", I start getting errors, because somehow that second gallery is clashing with the first one.

Is there perchance any tool to show all galleries (and track down orphans), the way there is with pictures?

BTW, in case any developers are looking at my account--I went through all the steps again to verify the behavior. (The same thing happened, only the error message changed to "Gallery 9 unknown".) So now, I'm betting that I have two orphan galleries named "Iraq". Feel free to delete them!

Thanks, but it doesn't seem to help....

The tool doesn't show any orphaned pictures in my account. (I'm not surprised, because the lost gallery was empty.)

I think the problem I have is analogous to the one described in that post, but it's not quite the same problem. That post was about pictures that don't belong to any well-defined gallery, and so are "orphaned". My problem is that I have an orphan gallery (a gallery that exists, but doesn't belong to any well-defined gallery or to the root level, so I can't find or delete it).

I was just coming to post about the vanishing (I'll not call them orphaned - how about kidnaped, because they are missing?). The whole gallery is gone. I'm glad I didn't have any pictures that were only in that gallery.

Major bug, or am I missing something?

See my comment below. I think it's because the proceed button performs a delete function that is shown on the other half of the "Manage your galleries" webpage. They have the default set to "delete gallery but save pictures".

I think you're right, because when I had a picture in gallery that I was trying to make into a child gallery, the gallery vanished, and the picture showed up in "Unsorted." Which is what happened when I hit "delete selected, but save pictures" on purpose.

By the way, is there a way to access "Unsorted" without having to upload a new photo?

Someone below said that you might be able to recover deleted galleries with a link they provided.

If that doesn't work, luckily all your text gets saved with the picks, so it's just a matter of readding them to a new gallery. Go to "Manage Galleries," pick the "Edit" option near unsorted, it should get you into the pictures that are in that gallery. Then you can click Pictures at the top, select the pictures you want to add to your gallery, then under Actions select "New Gallery" and it should let you create a new gallery with the same name.

keep in mind that since this is in a testing phase, the lj staff have warned us not to put pics up here that we wouldnt want accidentally lost.

I certainly would never have deleted a pic from my hard drive, just because I uploaded it to a new site. It would have just been inconvenient to have to re-upload them, and a waste of space if they were still there but not accessible.

i agree with this... and im sure theyll work on that. tho, it may be in relation to that "finding orphaned images" tool. of course, i dont know much about how fotobilder works behind the user interface.

Actually, the pictures wouldn't have been lost anyway, they simply wouild have gone to the "unsorted" space. And it wasnt' until later that I learned how easy it is to get there. I felt kind of dumb. :-)

I actually contributed feedback complaing that I couldn't get to the "unsorted" space. Later, I was like, "oh, that link that says, edit?"

I am pretty sure you're referring to the very same page I had trouble with one time. I was editing one of my galleries once to play around with parent and child galleries, clicked proceed, and my gallery vanished. I later saw that on the other half of the screen is an option for deleting galleries, and the default setting there is to delete the gallery but save pictures. So when you click proceed on one half of the screen where you want to edit the gallery, it actually performs the function listed on the other part of the screen as well, which was to delete the gallery. I posted a feedback for that page saying that they should probably change the default setting for deleting galleries to something like "Select an option."

I don't think that's my problem...

(Link)
The problem isn't just that the gallery is deleted--I wouldn't be worried about that. It's that it seems to be lost but not deleted, because if I try to create a new gallery with the same name, I start getting error messages. So evidently the gallery is still there, screwing up my client, but since it isn't displayed anywhere I can't delete it.

Thanks, though!
