Style Bugs?

For a while I was using the Apache style, I appreciated the simplicity. However, it seems that it does not display the complete index of a gallery with a large number (72) of images. The color hover and framed styles also appear to exhibit the same behavior. All the styles seem limited to displaying a maximum of 25 images in the index. The stranded and supper simple styles don't seem to have this problem. I would suppose that the style's simply aren't providing a link to the next page of images. Unfortunately I can't test this since I haven't gotten fotobuilder installed locally yet.

This behavior is present with Mozilla on WinXP and RedHat Linux (which much slower than 7.2).
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20020830
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20020826

I haven't tested it in IE recently but I know suffered the same behavior w/ the Apache style a few months ago.

(no subject)

Same as eaterofhands,I discovered that color hover only shows the first 25 images, and then the rest of the images are inaccesible unless i go to delete them.I hadnt checked the other styles yet,so I assumed we had a 25 image limit per gallery.

I also got errors while uploading large quantity of images.I was loading 178 images, and 59 went through and then an error occured.I couldnt tell you what it was, because the screen flashed and then it was gone.I tried duplicating it and it did reoccur but the message didnt stay up long enough to read.Im going to try to capture it with Snagit as I create more galleries.Im thinking it may be caused by a sudden change in the size of images uploaded maybe? The final file to be loaded would usually be a large one, something I would use for say...a background.

Additionally,on occasion the client crashes on me.In the middle of an upload I'll get a warning that an error is occuring and then the client shuts down.

Ive also noticed that while I have all my folders in thumbnail mode, the client shows some in thumbnail mode, and others with description, when choosing what files to upload.

I was also wondering if deleting would be a possible option in the client. If not individual photos,at least the deletion of galleries, because I tend to do themes in photos that are only used for a short while, and then replaced by another. It would be nice to remove one, right before you upload another.

Otherwise Im loving it.

Running it on XP pro with IE 6.

First impressions reply

My reply to kaoslord's "first impression" post....

explanation:
1 go to the upload page, "How many pictures would you like to upload?"
--Pick from a drop down of 1 - 10
2 the proper page comes up with the ammount of "browse" needed, and it has a field for title, and a text area for description as well as a combo box to add to gallery, the combo box lets you add to more than one gallery. as well as creating a new one.
--this all was super easy in PHP but I don't know how easy it will be with perl.
3 The final page.. tells you update successfull or not. and shows you thumbs of the pics uploaded and the info posted as well as a list of the galleries posted to

**I dont know how well perl works with CGI and variables from forms, but again, this woulda been piece of cake in php, so thats why i suggested it, i figured it shouldnt be too hard in perl

The web upload page was a quick addition and hasn't been given any UI friendliness yet. As much as I hate the idea of people actually using the web upload page, I realize it'll probably be the most popular method, as cumbersome as it is, so I'll be working on everything you mentioned.

Please, I never want to hear "in PHP, blah blah blah". A competent programmer can do anything in any language. Any shortcoming of FotoBilder's design is the result of lack of effort/time, not its implementation language.

CLIENT:

i miss the image preview on the fotki image upload activeX, perhaps this could be on the client? I dont think it should be too hard to add.

The client just did not work for me.. so i didn't test it.
--explanation: i tried uploading pics, it uploaded them, but they never showed in my galleries, also i couldnt get my list of galleries to load into the client.

evan can help, perhaps. Did you use username@pics.livejournal.com ?

COLOR PICKER:
it would be nice to on the side of it maybe be able to pick from the 256 standardweb-palette colors.. so many colors are frankly confussing, if i want to have multiple themes and keep the colors the same its going to be hard to pick the same color again from the picker.. if not impossible, I would like the ability to pick from the standard 256 color palette, and maybe an extra 32 colors or something from a "saved custom colors" palette.

That could be cool. mart wrote it, though, so I'll let him add that. I don't know that code.

CROPPING
--multiple crop states
----explanation: a picture can have multiple crop states. like a 4:3 a panoramic, a 1:1
--automatic cropping to a certain aspect ratio
----explanation: basically a resizeable, moveable box that allways kept its aspect ratio
--by default right now on the latest ie, the crop box by default has selection parts outside the picture bounds.
--What the hell does cropping do? it apparently had no effect on anything when i tested it.
--what is the focus point ?

You don't need multiple crop states since you got the focus point.

You select the interesting region of the image, then put the focus point the point within that which is valid for all thumbnail sizes.

Then, when a style wants a certain aspect ratio, it uses both the crop region you specified, the aspect ratio it wants, and finds a region within your crop region to center the cropping on.

Cropping only matters when you choose "Cropped" thumbnails for a gallery.

And the focus region only matters when you choose "Crop, but fit exactly" as the style.

GALLERIES:
The url's are ugly.

Those are the canonical URLs. You'll be able to give any entity (gallery, picture, profile page, etc...) its own URL. That part isn't done yet.

I think styles should have some, pre-generated color scheme's to pick from

That was an integral part of the S2 Design (S2 being the style language) but we just haven't made any yet. See the "Theme" drop-down for the Super Simple layout? There's White on Black and Black on White... so it does work. We just need to finish making pretty styles. jproulx and others are working on it.

Password protected galleries that any user with the password can see, no need for registration

That'd be cool! I'll add that.

I liked on fotki how i could have a tree of albums displayed with every page

That's a style issue.... FotoBilder gives that information to styles. We just need styles to utilize it. As mentioned earlier, we just started making styles.

I would like to see the ability comment on pictures

That's coming.

MANUAL:
would it be easier to build this in a wiki format? not really open to everyone, but to like only documentation volunteers and dev members etc? the wikipedia script is small, easy to install uses mysql and has the history revissions to protect from vandalism.

I like DocBook. :)

FOTKI COMPARISONS
PRO:
--I REALLY like the stand-alone client.
--I REALLY like the ability to add galleries from the client (even if its broken)
--I REALLY like being able to see a bunch of pictures and edit all thei info at once through the text & security menu
--I LOVE being able to customize my galleries. like big time love.

Good to hear. And all that is only going to get better.

CONS:
--no image preview on client [Minor]

Client issue. Hopefully as the system gets more popular, more clients will come out.

--fotki url-s are read-friendly. which made them easier to give out to friends. etc
proposed alias picpix.com/user/galleryname/[child?.../]pic#/ [Minor]

URL control is coming.

--NO EXIF data reading

That too is coming.

--No traffic statistics [Minor]

PicPix.com will have that. FotoBilder core will only have the hooks.

--no password protected albums [BIG ONE]

I hadn't thought of that, but I like the idea, so expect to see it.

--no option to see tree on pages. [minor]

The styles will improve.

--no comments [BIG ONE]

Coming.

i missed something

The whole

Choose other picture
Alternatively, you may choose a picture from another gallery by entering its ID number

is horrible. maybe if it let you click on a link tht popped up a small window that had a list of thumbnails and their id's.. otherwise a usability nightmare

Style updates

Jesse updated the Framed style a bunch. It's actually usable now for your entire account, not just specific galleries.

Also, he updated color hover and apache to do paging.
