Navigation and Styles

I hope this doesn't seem to be too critical sounding, because overall I love the work that's been done so far.

I'm enjoy building a gallery and uploading images to it. However, I see one really confusing thing about viewing these galleries. Whenever I test something for someone, I like to pretend that my knowledge level of web pages is very limited. So, when trying to view the picture galleries in this limited user mindframe, I find that some of the styles are extremely user-UNfriendly at this point in development. It is not very clear where a user should click to see a gallery from the User's main picture index (the top level). The best of these in this regard is the "Cornered" style, which actually says "Choose a gallery." I feel that all of the styles should make it so blatantly obvious for the viewer that this is a gallery and you click here to view it.

Another general comment I have about the styles is the navigation through the galleries. I know the purpose of styles is to give everyone a little something different to choose from and meet their own personal style, but perhaps some things should be basic to all styles, especially when it comes to user-friendliness and ease of navigation. For example, in "simple format," it seems very obvious to me what I need to do to navigate to the next photo or previous photo within the gallery. There are very big buttons and easy to notice. I do think, however, either some text or alternate text on the buttons would make it more more obvious to the user what these navigation buttons do (example: next photo, up to gallery level, etc). There's also a little snapshot of the image which would be next and which is the previous. It's pretty easy to navigate through.

However, when I switch to the "Cornered" style, for example, I found it difficult to find the navigation buttons in the first place. They are these tiny little arrows, really tightly squeezed together, and seem a little more confusing either because of their size or their proximity to one another, or both. I do like that this style does have alternate text over the buttons. However, I feel it would be helpful if the buttons were bigger and were more obvious--easy to see.

I guess my overall suggestion regarding styles is that the navigation into and within galleries could be made more obvious to accommodate all "Internet User levels."

to address one point...

In the 'manage' section of each gallery, you can designate a 'preview pic' that will show up as an index photo. Like I've done here: http://gallery.hurley.nu/henry/gallery/0000fke1

Ok, thank you! I missed that one. I deleted that part from my post so I won't get a flood of comments about it =).

eh, whatever you said was probably still important, though. if you had to ask the question, then someone else will too.

in short, it's a good idea to leave stuff here even if you figure it out, just so they know that it was confusing at first.

You are correct. However, it also happens that people sometimes don't bother to read other people's comments and you get several comments directing you to the answer over and over again. =)

For the curious, I had suggested it would be nifty if we could add an index photo to our galleries. henry noted that this option was already available and that I had only missed it. So if anyone else missed it, check out henry's comment above to see how you can add an index photo to your gallery.
