Begining beta testing

I'm happy with things now.

Sure, we don't have much in the way of styles, but we have one that mostly works. That's enough to get the ball rolling. There's plenty to use & test.

Based on the recommendation of thewalkingman, I've given the following users 50 MB of disk space:

anonymooz
chicky824
freshtastic73
genepool23
ldygabilan
lizvang
mrswalkingman
soulfly1974
superstar_pig

You can access your stuff at http://pics.livejournal.com/username and when you use the client, upload to usernames@pics.livejournal.com

I'm officially taking bug reports, usability complaints, and feature requests.

And if you want to join the beta-testing squad, email me your LJ username and a brief description of your computer skills, interest in the project, and familiarity with similar tools. Please, only committed testers... I crave lots of quality bug reports and suggestions.

I only have so much disk space to give out for now (it's all running on my personal server), so I'll only be giving out disk space to people that meet criteria not already met by a number of other people. That is, I want many different types of users. More than 1 of each is good, but not 50 of each.

I intend to reply to everybody, but if I get flooded, I may not reply. In that case, just wait for the next beta testing round. Each one will get larger in scope.

Will there be any plans of uploading images via website? Or a client must be used at all the time?

There will be a web upload, I'm sure, but it'll be kinda stupid, being web upload and all.

One file at a time. Even if we put multiple file inputs on a page, there's no way for a user to select multiple files at once.

But I'll make it... I have some interesting plans for it nonetheless.

No, I don't think it will be stupid. When I tried the beta client that Evan or Mart made, it would not work on my work's PC due to firewall, so a web upload would be good.

Fileman (http://gossamer-threads.com/scripts/fileman/index.htm) allows me to have multiple uplads and it works great. So I'm sure it can be done.

Have you thought about perhaps letting the user upload a .zip or .gz of images that the server would automatically decompress and file into a gallery? The gallery script I'm using on my webpage does this. The only problem I can think of is perhaps uploading a file that, when expanded, goes over the user's disk space quota.

Perhaps it could spit out a list of all files extracted, display their sizes, and allow the user the option to pick which ones are kept and which are trashed.

That would be excellent as most of my stuff is zipped and burned to disk.

Excellent. Thanks for including me in the beta program! I'll do my best to provide feedback. Now, I assume there is a seperate fotobuilder client...but where do I d/l it from?

What username@host are you using in the client?

Can you get to that host in your web browser?

Your password is your LJ password, if you're using pics.livejournal.com

the client is listing me as superstar_pig@picpix.com.

That solved it.Just switched to the journal name.

i asked about the password because the password box only showed the first 7 characters so it was a bit confusing.

Granted im a bit slow today, and had to reread this post 17 times before I figured everything out,but what about a help section in the client?

I was logged in as superstar_pig@livejournal.com,and didnt figure out my mistake til i looked at this post a few times.

Perhaps to a link to a FAQ.

Additionally its a bit annoying that it allows you to log in as a user that doesnt exist.

I can sign in to the client with LJ or hotmail, and there is no login error.Thats why it took so long to figure out the mistake.

Tried creating a gallery named "Ré" and uploaded a test pic to it, name of the gallery was fucked and although it showed "(1)" the gallery wasn't functional. Is that a known issue with the handling of accentuated characters ?

Evan's client doesn't yet support utf-8. And the server doesn't yet bitch when clients don't do utf-8 correctly.

For now, upload to a gallery without accents, then rename the gallery on the website and it should work.

Problem is, I can't access said gallery or it's managing page (gives me blank pages), therefore can't delete it...

Is something broken today ? I'm trying to upload a batch of pics thru Evan's client and it keeps crapping on me after a couple pics giving me an InternetWriteFile(bytesuploaded/byteslefttoupload): connection with the server has been reinitialized error

I think I'm late for this; it says that the page cannot be displayed
